What motor is in it? 3.1 or 3.4? Uhh actually it doesn’t matter as they are both shit. I had a Grand Prix of that same gen. It was a love hate relationship. Did I mention the motors are shit?

3.4. The motor is fine. Decent power and the Z34 is the lightest car they ever put it in so it pulls pretty good as well. The issue is there isn’t SHIT for room in the engine bay so working on it is next to impossible.

Make sure its perfect. Any GM dealer will tell you nearly all the special parts in that engine are discontinued , gone, nada, zip, zero in existance other than used. Even RockAuto doesn’t have cams or valves. Lifters are even difficult to find. Just a warning. If you notice is missing I can tell you what no longer can be sourced. BTW, the missing marker lamp is about $10 at Rock Auto or $38 at dealership.

The best thing I bought for this car is the for sale sign

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Two timing belts.

Three alternators.

The exhaust system rusted out two times.

Intake gasket.

Rear motor seals.

Driver side door handle.

Air cleaner box froze one winter and cracked.

Changing spark plugs and alternator is a nightmare.

Windshield.

Tires.

Two battery’s.

Replaced front struts.

Oil pressure gage doesn’t work.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

This car is a quick and fun car to drive, when it is running.

The motor was put in with a shoehorn, so changing the alternator is a $400.00 touch.

Every part that I bought for this car is so expensive for a domestic car.

On the other hand, I have beaten 5.0 Mustangs, and Z28's before, but I am probable making this up, because we should never race on the streets.

The car is a dream on the highways.

I have seen this car get over 31 mpg before.

And it has lots of power when you need to go.

The interior is all Grey cloth in mine, so it gets dirty in a hurry.

The seats are comfortable, but the leg room is poor if you are over 6 feet tall.

This car has turned me off of domestic cars forever.

I have a 1976 Chevrolet C-10 half ton that is way more reliable than this thing.

This car has nasty body roll in a high speed corner.

Who ever designed this car should be shot.

At least much of the suspension and drivetrain stuff is easy to get. Just the odd-ball 4 cam 3.4L stuff thats scary. I know them fairly well. One of my friends in the dealership owned one. Will let you know that the alternator replacement is a 4 hour job by GM shop manual but I can know how to cheat it out from under the car in less than two?

Sell for profit? On a Lumina? Would be a real first. These things are such a pain in the ass to work on. I drove 2 of them with the 5 speed and they’re not even that quick.

Brian1321, who used to post around here, once told me a story about one of these, his first car:

“It would break a lot, but never stuff you’d expect to break. Like, you’d start driving the car and it’s handling would be really off, the back end all over the road, so you’re thinking its a suspension problem, but then you hear this sloshing noise coming from behind you. So you go back and open the truck and the car is like ‘SURPRISE FUCKFACE! YOUR TRUNK IS FULL OF WATER AND IT DIDN’T EVEN RAIN LAST NIGHT!!!’”

Funny how many musicians Ballard has influenced. Supposedly Joy Division took a lot from his work.

Oh yeah. Atrocity Exhibition is even the name of a song by them. Ballard was pretty much the theme of post-punk.
